commafruit.co.uk. welcome.

Just occasionally the Slashdot comments turn up something insightful. A concise reason why this person uses a Mac (it just works and he’s got work to do.)
N.B. I use Linux near-exclusively (started using XP for work recently), and have done for many years. When Ubuntu 4.10 was released I switched almost instantly, but that doesn’t mean I don’t sympathise with those who have good reasons for preferring other systems - especially OSX users.

Napoleon Dynamite

One of the most bizarre films I’ve seen in a while, at first I wasn’t sure I enjoyed this, but when certain characters and scenes returned to me later, I started to wonder. Example:

Napoleon, Pedro and Deb are at a party.
Napoleon: “So are you guys having a killer time?”
Deb (deadpan): “Yes.”

Worth seeing just for the scene where Pedro drinks a glass of water, has a bath, then cuts his hair. I told you it was bizarre.

A Geek’s Shopping List

Found this shopping list, I must have written it after I moved into my new flat (oh yeah, I moved into a new flat a couple of weeks ago - more on that and Peterboroughw (the city I moved to) later).

It shows:

  • That I am a geek, equating buying bread and a new router…
  • …with the handwritting of a small child.

Shopping List Pic

Translated:

  • Bread
  • Small milk [one pint bottle]
  • All fruit [that I like, and would want in the near future]
  • Treats [biscuits etc.]
  • Router [I guess the cable people were coming that day!?]

Amazon have released a new system where people sign up to do, quick, simple, menial tasks over the internet, and get paid. Looks interesting, though when I looked at the task list (it’s free to join), a lot of the tasks appeared US-centric (understandably).

“American Style” Fish Fingers

Found this little recipe in a student cookbook. The description says it’s popular in America, but a quick Google search didn’t show much evidence of this. I haven’t added any quantities to this post as you can change it for however many you want.

Fish fingers
Bread (a roll, ideally)
Cheese (for melting, I prefer extra mature for this)
Worcester sauce (your choice, but if you make anything involving melted cheese without worcester sauce, I won’t talk to you anymore)

Cook the fish fingers as it says on the packet, but just before they’re done, take them out and place on the bread. Grill (even if you’ve been just using the oven until now) the fingers on the bread for a couple of minutes, then remove. Grate cheese on top of the fingers, then grill breifly until the cheese begins to melt. When this happens, drizzle Worcester sauce over the cheese. Grill for a couple of minutes more, until the cheese browns.

Serve on it’s own as a snack, or with chips/peas etc., as a meal. Also, try adding tartare, but remember if the cheese is too strong this might be redundant.

George R. Stewart - Earth Abides

Earth Abides tells the tale of a just-post apocalyptic world, one in which all but very few humans have been destroyed by disease. The story follows Ish, and describes how he copes with the changes. Then later, his efforts to rebuild civilisation.

The text uses a charming mix of scientific speculation, (describing how both the natural and man-made worlds will change with the absence of humans), and some searching character descriptions.

The imagination displayed here is impressive, but the down to Earth style makes you realise the ideas are largely born from the authors observations of the world around him, and his wondering: what if..?

Deviantart.com

I submitted a new piece to DeviantArt yesterday - haven’t done that in ages. It used to be that I would submit all manner of stuff (especially to my old account), but I think now I’ll just use it for more “arty” type things.

New “Peterborough” page coming soon for more traditional photography. This is partly an extension of the plans I had for Manchester (now somewhat defunct - at least until September 2007), but also inspired by a project by Kathleen Connally.

Last.fm Troubles

As a loyal user of Last.fm, I love checking on my charts as they change, and have been surprised to learn what it is that I listen to most (NOFXw | Last apparently – maybe not such a surprise). They’ve had a lot of downtime the last couple of months, with chart updates being highly sporadic (as a result of which I was given a free month’s subscription last month; more on subscriptions later), and though I’ve enjoyed the service I’ve received and waited patiently, a glance at the forums reveals that a huge number of users have been thoughtless, rude, and impatient with the staff. This is really disappointing, and must be even more so for the staff and forum moderators who work on the site.

For those who haven’t heard of the service, you install a plugin to your regular media player, then whenever you play a properly tagged audio track, the data is submitted to Last.fm, who collate the information and produce charts of your listening habits. These charts simply hadn’t been updating correctly, but promises of upgrades and service improvements seem to have done little to placate many users.

I’ve thought often of upgrading to the subscription service offered by Last.fm, but never seem to do so, largely because the benefits just aren’t worth it. If for the same price I was getting what I have now, plus the benefits of the subscription, I would consider it more strongly, but since the free service is so good, it is not worth the expense (trivial though it may seem, at £1.50/month). The company are perhaps a victim of their own success in this respect. I’ll probably pay for a couple of months once this current (gratis) subscription expires.

Fixfox Web Developer Extension

Was shown this plug-in for Firefox. It’s an add-in which adds a “web developer toolbar” to Firefox, presenting you with a bewildering array of options, including the ability to disable various elements (such as images, java, javascript, etc.), but also provides more advanced functionality like in-place CSS editing, and this is just scratching the surface. An incredibly useful tool.
