Bill Bryson retraces a trip through Europe he took in the 1970’s, when he was 17. If you’re looking for a travel guide for Europe, I’m afraid this isn’t it. Bryson has his own technique for travel and exploration (which, I note, is similar to my own), this being that he arrives at a location and just meanders. This produces some entertaining encounters, but it’s the author’s own banter which really entertains. For example, when he doesn’t understand the language he’s hearing, he simply fills in his own (often absurd) dialogue.
