Commafruit

These geeks… have no life. Video of people waiting in line to pay $600 for a pre-order of a PS3. I want to find this funny, but it’s actually more pathetic than anything.

AMD-ATI (or rather, just AMD now), announce “Fusion”. The gist of this is that it’s a CPU and a GPU on a single chip. This should be great for desktops using 3D, and requiring hardware acceleration (I might look into installing Beryl), and for media center PC’s. Hence I’m quite interested in this news.
I have previously favoured nVidia for graphics, but if this Fusion takes off, maybe I’ll reconsider. Especially if ATI AMD offer adequate Linux driver support.

Sony lawsuits force Lik-Sang out of business. Sony’s PR/general attitude to the rest of the world really is disgraceful, I’m keener than ever to avoid them now. (Says he with a PS2 in his living room, and plans to add games to it…)

Amazon have released a new system where people sign up to do, quick, simple, menial tasks over the internet, and get paid. Looks interesting, though when I looked at the task list (it’s free to join), a lot of the tasks appeared US-centric (understandably).

Last.fm Troubles

As a loyal user of Last.fm, I love checking on my charts as they change, and have been surprised to learn what it is that I listen to most (NOFXw | Last apparently – maybe not such a surprise). They’ve had a lot of downtime the last couple of months, with chart updates being highly sporadic (as a result of which I was given a free month’s subscription last month; more on subscriptions later), and though I’ve enjoyed the service I’ve received and waited patiently, a glance at the forums reveals that a huge number of users have been thoughtless, rude, and impatient with the staff. This is really disappointing, and must be even more so for the staff and forum moderators who work on the site.

For those who haven’t heard of the service, you install a plugin to your regular media player, then whenever you play a properly tagged audio track, the data is submitted to Last.fm, who collate the information and produce charts of your listening habits. These charts simply hadn’t been updating correctly, but promises of upgrades and service improvements seem to have done little to placate many users.

I’ve thought often of upgrading to the subscription service offered by Last.fm, but never seem to do so, largely because the benefits just aren’t worth it. If for the same price I was getting what I have now, plus the benefits of the subscription, I would consider it more strongly, but since the free service is so good, it is not worth the expense (trivial though it may seem, at £1.50/month). The company are perhaps a victim of their own success in this respect. I’ll probably pay for a couple of months once this current (gratis) subscription expires.

More thoughts about new consoles

I’m a keen but not obsessive gamer (I left my TV and PS2 at my parents house due to needing to work this term), but there’s been a lot of news lately (mostly due to E3), about the upcoming battle between Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo for dominance of the console market. While I’ve all but decided to buy a Nintendo Wii (previously Revolution), this somewhat muddled comment on Slashdot made me think:

Seems to me instead of arguing which is better[,] we should be revelling in the fact these billion dollar companies are competing fo fiercly to create a product we’ll buy. Dance, monkeys!

Making Money On-Line

Found this article on stromcode about making money from running a website (naturally, the bulk of the text focuses on advertising). While that’s not something I had in mind when I set up this site (or in any web-based venture I’ve started), it made me think about the possibilities. As the article says however, making money on the web is hard, so maybe it’s good that this isn’t my primary aim.
