When I was working in an office last year, one of the ‘net memes that stuck around was Lolcats. These are odd pictures of cats (usually highly saccharine), with bizarre captions added, and I found that although they can be quite funny, once you’ve seen a couple (of dozen) you’ve seen ‘em all. This one came to my attention recently though, reminded me of laughing at them last year.
BTW, look at the comments on that page - all written in the same style as the captions.

I’ve had this page in my del.icio.us for some time, but some trouble building a header which changes width depending on the user resolution for a new website reminded me of it. Internet ‘96 takes a wry look at (now major) websites from 1996. My favourite, from the New York Times:

Web design in 1996 is very easy–you just format a page however you want and say, “Please open your window to the width of this line of text.” No, don’t worry what type of monitor your visitors have. They won’t be seeing any awkward white space so long as they manually line up their windows to a specified line of text like the little jackasses they are. If they’re so intent on preening around with their own specialty window size they can go make their own goddamned website.

Great example of a niche blog: one dedicated to recording sightings of lowercase Ls, when all other letters are written in caps. Now that I think about it, why do people do that?

The next time you find yourself on a plane, sitting next to someone who cannot resist chattering to you endlessly, I urge you to quietly pull your laptop out of your bag, carefully open the screen (ensuring the irritating person next to you can see it), and hit this link.

More strange stuff that people have posted on del.icio.us: 56 users have bookmarked “localhost”, and plenty of others have created similar bookmarks.

I did find a couple of other amusing entries in there though, including locahost.com, a service for those who frequently misspell localhost as locahost, and end up there…

A series of videos which appear to have been made by Nike, and which show objects being hit at 200mph with a Golf-ball, and then the resulting impact/explosion in slow-motion.
Not sure if this is educational at all, but it’s amusing enough.

Irn-Bru vs. The Snowman

Christmas is coming, one of the things that reminds me of this season as much as anything is The Snowmanw. This Irn-Bru advert is a brilliant variation - supposedly it’s only due to be shown in Scotland, hopefully they’ll reconsider and show it in England also.

Slashdot Posting Bug Infuriates Haggard Admins
Haha. When Slashdot passed the 2^24 (16,777,216) comments threshold, the size was larger than the index of their MySQL table, so now there’s no threading for the next couple of hours. As a post on the site itself says, “It’s true that… ‘Anyone could have made the mistake’. But it’s so much funnier when that anyone is not you.”

Horizontal Biscuits

It has come to my attention that biscuits of any quality tend to be packaged horizontally, that is, in a few small piles. Therefore, I would like to introduce the phrase “horizontal biscuit”, which refers not to the current orientation of the sweet, but to how it was packaged. This in turn then, implies that the biscuit is of a certain quality.

This recruitment video for an American state university has to be one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever seen. Whoever thought that having basically a slideshow (with the same wipe every time), and that bizarre song, would be a good idea!?

Russian Playing Cards

Since I moved to Peterborough, I’ve been playing cards with people who have a preference for playing with Russian playing cards*. These cards are unusual not only in their design and markings (”D” (though the character much more resembles an “A”) is Queen, “B” is Jack, “T” is Ace…), but also in that the cards 2-5 are missing, meaning the deck consists of only 36 cards.

No valid explanation was ever offered for this, but perhaps the most amusing is that when sailors brought the cards to Russia from the west, some of the cards got lost, and the Russians who found them just went along with what they had, telling the printers who were to recreate them “oh yeah, that’s how things are in the west… missing out the first five numbers then appearing to tack the number one on the end…”

* the guy I’m taking over from in this new job - his fiance is from Russia.

See this MSDN article for a Microsoft solution to the Linux “problem”. Not sure why I find this funny - I think it’s the fact that Linux is dealt with so matter-of-factly, as though Linux were something that an unwitting user had accidently infected their machine with, like some kind of malware…

A Geek’s Shopping List

Found this shopping list, I must have written it after I moved into my new flat (oh yeah, I moved into a new flat a couple of weeks ago - more on that and Peterboroughw (the city I moved to) later).

It shows:

  • That I am a geek, equating buying bread and a new router…
  • …with the handwritting of a small child.

Shopping List Pic

Translated:

  • Bread
  • Small milk [one pint bottle]
  • All fruit [that I like, and would want in the near future]
  • Treats [biscuits etc.]
  • Router [I guess the cable people were coming that day!?]
